Cake International Day 2025

Creating Our Show-Stopping Piece for Cake International 2025: A Journey of Art, Sugar & Growth

Entering Cake International 2025 was more than a competition entry for us — it was a commitment to push our skills, imagination, and endurance further than ever before. What began as a daring concept evolved into a dramatic sculptural piece blending realism and advanced sugar-craft techniques. And as the photos show… it was a journey full of late nights and unforgettable moments.

1. The Concept: “Beauty Set in Sugar, Silence Set in Stone”

Our theme centred on contrast — the softness and fragility of sugar art against the cold permanence of stone. This became the heart of our design: a weathered, moss-covered tombstone intertwined with an ancient tree… and a disturbingly realistic edible brain creating a horrific crime scene set at a graveyard!

1.1 Bringing the Gravestone to Life

01

One of our first major steps was sculpting the gravestone base. Here you can see the early structural work as the form began to take shape:

We spent many hours carving, smoothing, and adjusting. Achieving the cracked-stone look by layering textures and hand-painting details until the surface looked aged and natural.

1.2 Adding the Twisted Tree

1.2

The tree became one of the most satisfying parts of the build — entirely edible, but sculpted to feel alive and ancient.

We hand-formed every root and twist, then shaded them to create depth and realism. This image captures a moment of intense concentration while refining the bark textures.

2. The Brain: A Showstopper Within the Showstopper

the brain

One of the most talked-about elements was the hyper-realistic body parts — sculpted, painted, glazed, and then embedded in edible soil.

Its glossy, visceral appearance added a dramatic contrast against the earthy textures of the scene.

3. Building the Scene: Soil, Moss & Atmosphere

building the scene

Creating the ground took just as much love as the sculpture itself.

The edible soil was layered, crumbled, and shaded to mimic real earth.

From there, we added mosses, roots, cracked stones, foliage details and white sugar “growths” creeping up the tombstone.

This photo beautifully shows the interplay between stone, tree, moss, and creeping sugar veining.

4. The Learning Curve

Was everything smooth? Absolutely not — and that’s part of what made the journey so worthwhile.

We learned:

  • How small structural changes can dramatically affect stability.
  • That drying times don’t care about deadlines.
  • Transporting a large, delicate piece is its own form of stress test.
  • Exhibition lighting changes everything.
  • And that you’re never really “finished” — you just run out of time.

5. Cake International Day: The Big Reveal

And then — the moment that made it all worthwhile.

Seeing the piece displayed among some of the world’s most breathtaking sugar-art creations was surreal.
Crowds stopped.
People photographed every corner.
And the feedback was incredible.

Even more special was receiving a Merit Award — a testament to the heart, effort, and creativity poured into this entry. This was also a reflection moment I KNEW I could have done better, if I had realised how epic the competition would be, I would have pushed my limits further and tested boundaries in terms of sound and movement. It was most defiantly a learning and improvement experience

6. Looking Ahead: Planning for Cake International 2026

The moment we packed up our stand, our minds were already racing with ideas for next year.

We’re dreaming bigger — structurally, artistically, and narratively.
This year has given us:

  • Stronger techniques
  • Clearer planning
  • New inspirations
  • And confidence to push even further

Cake International 2026 is already on our sketchpads — and if you thought this year’s piece was bold… just wait.

7. Thank You

Thank you to everyone who supported the journey — whether you watched the progress clips, gave feedback, or stopped at the stand during the show.
This piece was created with passion, curiosity, and a love for the craft, and we can’t wait to share the next chapter with you.
